Legislation that would permit the Giants to formally make Willie Mays Plaza the mailing address of their new China Basin ballpark was introduced yesterday at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Amos Brown's legislation will be voted on at Monday's meeting, and quick passage seems likely to honor one of the city's greatest sports heroes.
At Thursday's groundbreaking for the $307 million stadium, Giants President Peter Magowan surprised Mays by announcing that the ballpark's address will be:
Pacific Bell Park, 1 Willie Mays Plaza, San Francisco 94107.
But to make that the 42,000-seat park's legal address, the city will have to formally rename a bit of King Street. That is the point of the legislation. Mayor Willie Brown's signature will also be required.
The team also plans to honor Mays, No. 24, by planting 24 palm trees along the park's King Street facade and erecting a statue of him at the main entrance.
